In the recent CNBC "Squawk Alley" program, Executive Director of Electronic Arts (EA) Andrew Wilson talked about EA's view of virtual reality games. Although Wilson said that virtual reality and augmented reality have been embedded in EA's Frostbite engine, he pointed out that the company's current focus is still on mobile games.
Wilson believes that the market needs a strong user base before VR becomes mainstream. In addition, the market also needs to handle hardware challenges. When talking about the hardware needed to run VR on mobile devices, Wilson said the public "does not want to carry extra things with them."
He made it clear that "mobile devices are the largest game platform on the planet." EA's growth in the mobile game market is faster than other platforms. When asked about the future of VR and AR, and when these new media will become part of the core industry, Wilson replied: “You will see them in 2017 (they become core parts) and they will meet in 2018. It will grow, but you may have to wait for several years to see it grow into a large industry."
It seems that EA is planning to start with a mobile game project and choose the right time to take a direct charge in the mobile VR market. As for the mobile VR and host VR which will truly become the trend of the future, it may be a big bet for bigwigs.
