Softbank Announces Acquisition of 31 billion U.S. Dollars in ARM

Softbank announced in July this year that it will acquire British chip design firm ARM for £24.3 billion (about $32 billion) in cash. And just two months after the acquisition was announced yesterday, the company announced that the deal had been officially completed. This is one of the largest mergers and acquisitions in the global technology market this year.

According to sources, ARM will officially withdraw from the London Stock Exchange today. Softbank said that ARM will continue to operate as an independent company and that in the next few years it will double ARM's workforce to 5,000 to 6,000 people.

ARM is the world's leading semiconductor intellectual property provider. More than 95% of smartphones and tablet CPUs worldwide use the ARM architecture. ARM designed a large number of cost-effective, low-power RISC processors and related technologies and software.

It is reported that Softbank has implemented a series of acquisition transactions in recent years. ARM is the most recent one. Earlier, Softbank also acquired Sprint for US$20 billion and spent US$15 billion to acquire Vodafone’s Japanese operations.

Industry analysts believe that Softbank is expected to use its acquisition of ARM to advance its Internet of Things initiative. However, Digitimes Research, a research institute in Taiwan, issued a report in July that the acquisition of ARM may not be of much help to Softbank, because Softbank and ARM are far from each other in terms of the current customer base and main business.
