The Verge Chinese Station reported on October 30th
In the just-started NBA season, during the pre-game training between the Sacramento Kings and the San Antonio Spurs, I saw professional photographers shooting full shots of Pau Gasol's athletic shoes and an injured substitute athlete. At this time, I realized that these photographers were preparing for the new season's virtual reality NBA signal broadcast. Through this shooting, we will get a new NBA viewing experience.
Then, for the first time in my life, I watched an NBA event with a virtual reality signal. The race signal is handled by NextVR, and currently as an NBA partner, only smartphones like the Samsung Gear VR and the Galaxy S7 Edge can be watched, including my personal use of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Through the broadcast of the virtual reality signal, I experienced the feeling of being in the stadium. I could even see Pau Gasol's stomach. Although I did not come to the scene, all this was clearly visible.
Watching the game in a virtual reality way is like a telecasting shot where I'm manipulating the game signal. If I want to see where I want to look, I just need to turn around. And when I look down and look down, I will see a floating game data card, including time, scores and statistics. If you look back, it is more detailed statistics of the game. NextVR has taken this approach in order to help us focus more on the game itself and not be attracted by these virtual reality effects. I think this idea is very good.
In the virtual reality signal, the main point of view comes from the camera in the center of the venue. When the athletes start the game, this camera will provide a very great perspective, and I can even feel their speed and size. But when the players attack halftime or defensively, the virtual reality perspective seems to have limitations. I can watch the offensive from an external perspective, but I can't see the detailed movements of several players at the rim.
To solve this problem, the team took an interesting approach. Just like broadcast TV, the NextVR team switches in real time through eight different shots. When players dribbling near the basket to shooting and rebounding, they quickly switch between different perspectives through different shots. This is a smart approach and will not let the audience miss any details. However, in doing so, there is a slight discount on immersion. After all, different perspectives repeatedly switch and jump, and there is always the feeling of “playingâ€.
In addition, NextVR also added its own commentary in the virtual reality broadcast, and the level is also very professional. However, here I need to put forward a small proposal, that is, when the virtual reality broadcast, you can let choices shield the voice. After all, there are people who like to hear more about the exchanges between players, the sound of sports shoes rubbing the floor, and the sound of jumping up and down. This feeling even makes me feel like playing games.
I watched three games through virtual reality. It was a very interesting experience. I decided to watch another game next time. However, it is clear that this service is still in the testing phase and there are still many problems. For example, in the process of watching, there have been several cases of image suspended animation or unsynchronized sound and picture. I had to close the app and restart it to recover.
In addition to technical issues, there are other issues to be considered in the virtual signal broadcast, such as how to handle the screen during the pause, how to handle the game signal when the user comes to the phone, and the like.
Yes, this way, I can spend less money to experience what I feel like being in a venue. However, I can't watch the ball while chatting with my friends like I did when I was in the arena.
Although the NBA is now being broadcast on virtual reality signals, both NBA and NextVR lack experience, but I still have great expectations for this. If we can improve the live broadcast speed in the future, solve the problem of perspective, and add more powerful hardware configuration, it will not be too far away from virtual reality watching that is truly 100% immersive.
