A fast AVR32 CPU with DSP instructions is ideal for audio decoding tasks, while a UC3A device can handle two audio interfaces. For high-quality stereo output, the chip integrates a stereo 16-bit bitstream audio DAC with built-in FIR and Comb filters; for 4-channel or full surround sound, the IIS interface can be used to connect to an external audio codec. Both interfaces are supported by drives that utilize the AVR32 peripheral DMA controller, which significantly reduces CPU overhead.
The ATEVK1105 board is preloaded with software for demonstrating audio playback, while the booted kit scans MP3 or other audio files from all USB storage devices for playback. The kit's software even scans ID3 tags and displays album singer and song information on a 2-inch QVGA onboard display. Since MP3 decoding of USB storage devices requires only one-third of the AVR32 processing power, a large amount of processing power can be used to run the operating system, transfer data, and refresh the display.
Customers with an Apple® license can connect the kit to an iPod or iPhone® using an Apple-certified chip adapter.
Designed for high data throughput applications, the AVR32 microcontroller is equipped with dual port SRAM, a 6-layer data bus and a multi-channel peripheral DMA controller to help speed.
