Thermal management is critical to the performance and lifetime of LEDs , so structural engineers must consider the thermal issues of LEDs early in development.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has made the following assessments for LEDs: no other lighting technology can have the same energy-saving potential as LEDs and improve the quality of our built environment. Since the lifetime of the LED is a function of junction temperature, thermal management is critical to the performance of the LED.
Rudi Hechfellner, Application Technology Manager, Philips Lumileds Lighting, SanJose, California, said: "Thermal management is by far the most important aspect of LED system design. LED system manufacturers are looking for optimized heat sinks, high-efficiency printed circuit boards, and high thermal conductivity. Rate housings and other advanced thermal design techniques address this challenge. Thermal simulations can be used to enhance different designs and optimize system-level designs from the perspective of heat dissipation before thermal models are built.

The emergence of LED lighting
Solid-state lighting is an emerging technology that will fundamentally change the form of lighting in the future. The initial power of the LED design is less than 50 milliwatts. In the past decade, the power of LEDs has risen to 40-80 lm/Watt. In addition to high energy efficiency, LEDs have a long service life. Depending on the type and type of manufacture, the life of a white LED can range from 6,000 to 50,000 hours, above 30,000 hours of fluorescent (light) tubes and 2000 hours of incandescent bulbs. In addition, LEDs can produce monochromatic light without the use of filters.
