Compared with traditional fluorescent light boxes and neon lights, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used in billboards because of their high initial price, but they are characterized by high brightness, long life and energy saving. Some Japanese lamp manufacturers and billboard operators are optimistic about this product and are working hard to develop relevant cities.
The latest issue of the Nikkei Weekly quoted industry statistics as saying that the current domestic billboard market in Japan is about 72 billion yen (1 US dollar is equivalent to 122 yen), of which the lighting billboard market is only 3.8 billion yen. If the LED billboards can be successfully promoted, the market size of the lighting billboards can be expanded to 10 billion yen.
Fluorescent billboards in some city railway stations in downtown Tokyo and Qiyu County have been converted to LEDs last year, using new products from Japan's Kobo. It is said to have a lifespan of 60,000 hours, 5-10 times that of fluorescent lamps, and consumes one-third of the electricity. However, the initial investment in such LED products is relatively high. A 1.3 m X 2.4 m billboard requires about 600,000 yen, which is four times that of a fluorescent billboard of the same size.
Matsushita Electric Co., Ltd. also launched a new LED product in May, and an optical lens is placed above the light source to achieve a linear optical effect of neon light. It is said that this product has a lifespan of 40,000 hours, four times that of neon lights, and a 60% reduction in power consumption. The initial investment is twice that of neon lights. Matsushita Electric plans to make LED annual sales reach 1 billion yen in 2010.
Although the initial investment was higher, both Guangbo and Matsushita Electric stated that the investment could be recovered within 2-4 years. In addition to the advantages of energy saving and low voltage requirements, LED billboards are relatively simple to assemble and disassemble, and are more suitable for installation at stations, railways and high-rise buildings. Lightwave also plans to introduce a panel that facilitates the assembly of LEDs in September to drive sales of LED billboards.
