According to DIGITIMES Research, the currently available microdisplay technologies include crystal glass-based HTPS TFT LCD, silicon wafer-based DLP and LCoS, and AMOLED on Silicon, which were originally applied to projection technology and have been commercialized for several years. AMOLED on Silicon has proven to be the most suitable for AR glasses and has been available in the market. However, due to the main shortcomings of OLED technology, such as luminous efficiency, operating temperature range and lifetime, inorganic Micro LED will be the mainstream of future micro display technology in the long run.

DIGITIMES Research pointed out that with the large-size TFT LCD panel generation entering the 10.5 generation line, the small and medium-sized TFT LCD and AMOLED panel generations have also entered the 6th generation line. The traditional flat display technology and application are gradually entering a mature stage, and the future display application development will move toward wear. Or in the fields of virtual reality and augmented reality (VR/AR), in general, wafer-based microdisplay technology is more suitable for emerging applications due to factors such as contrast value, panel fineness and power saving.

DIGITIMES Research also pointed out that the production of Micro LED arrays (lattice widths of 10 to 15 microns) on silicon wafers has matured, so microdisplays using this technology are expected to be introduced into mass production in the near future, and are expected to be available in 2018-2019. During the year, it was promoted to wearable applications such as smart watches; however, to extend such technologies to general flat panel display applications, mass transfer efficiency has become the biggest technical bottleneck. How to efficiently transfer LED dies to glass or plastic substrates will become the key to replacing traditional planar display technology with Micro LED technology.
