In order to offset the carbon emissions generated by the hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the South African Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Environment Program, the South African Department of Energy, the South African Ministry of Tourism, the Central Energy Fund, the Iscomm Power Company and the 2010 International Foot The World Cup Organizing Committee and European lighting technology provider Lemnis have jointly launched the "Light Emitting Diode (LED) Startup Project". As part of the South Africa Ministry of the Environment's National Green Plan, part of the carbon credits the project will receive will be passed to the Ministry of the Environment to compensate for the carbon footprint of the 2010 World Cup.
It is estimated that the 2010 World Cup, a global sporting event, will generate a carbon footprint of approximately 900,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
Currently, Lemnis South Africa has extensive lighting modification projects in hotels, office buildings, homes, urban streets and rural areas. Gostru, head of Lemnis, said that by replacing 3 million LED bulbs, 24 MWh of electricity can be saved, which is equivalent to building a 60 MW thermal power plant. The "LED Startup Project" is also the world's first clean development mechanism (CDM) project to use LED lighting to apply for carbon credits.
