In 1973, IBM successfully developed a new type of hard disk IBM 3340. This hard drive has several coaxial metal discs coated with magnetic material. They are sealed in a box together with a movable magnetic head. The magnetic head can read the changes in magnetic signals from the rotating disk-this is the ancestor of the hard disk we use today-IBM calls it Winchester (Winchester) Hard disk, also called warm disk.
The name "Winchester" also has a small origin; the IBM3340 has two 30MB storage units, and the caliber and charge of a well-known "Winchester rifle" at that time also happened to contain two The number "30"; so the internal code name of this hard drive was designated as "Winchester".
Winchester hard disk uses an amazing technology: its head does not contact the disk; it is conceivable that if the speed of accessing data is to be increased, the disk of the hard disk should spin faster and faster. But if the head is in contact with the disc, no matter what material is used, it is impossible to do this kind of work. The technician thought of letting the head "fly" above the platters, keeping a very close distance from the platters. This idea is feasible, because the high-speed rotation of the disk will produce flowing wind, as long as the shape of the magnetic head is appropriate, it can fly like an airplane. In this way, the disc can spin quickly without worrying about disasters caused by friction. The magnetic head is fixed on an arm that can move in the radial direction of the disc. As the magnetic head moves at a high speed relative to the disk and the distance between the two is very close, even a small amount of dust can cause damage to the disk. Therefore, the disc, the magnetic head and the drive mechanism are sealed in a box.
About "Winchester"In 1973, IBM successfully developed a new type of hard drive, the IBM 3340.
This hard drive has several coaxial metal discs coated with magnetic material. They are sealed in a box together with a movable magnetic head. The magnetic head can read the changes in magnetic signals from the rotating disk-IBM calls it a Winchester hard drive.
The name IBM3340 "Winchester" has a small origin.
The IBM 3340 has two 30MB storage units, and the caliber and charge of a well-known "Winchester rifle" at that time also happened to contain two numbers "30". So the internal code name of this hard drive was designated as "Winchester"
The moving speed of an ordinary hard disk head relative to the disk can reach hundreds of kilometers per hour.
The world's first Winchester hard drive IBM 3340 has a capacity of 60M.
The essence of "Winchester" technology is:"A sealed, fixed and high-speed rotating plated disk, the head moves along the radial direction of the disk, and the head floats above the high-speed rotating disk without direct contact with the disk." This is also the prototype of most modern hard disks.
