On December 6th, according to foreign media reports, Uber agreed to acquire Geometric Intelligence, a New York-based artificial intelligence (AI) startup, and created a new artificial intelligence R&D department.
Uber acquires an AI start-up and establishes an AI lab focused on autonomous driving technology
Uber said it will transfer the 15-person team of Geometric Intelligence to San Francisco, and set up Uber AI Labs to improve the network car service, including more accurate predictions of passenger location and travel time.
In addition, this new division will focus on autonomous driving technology.
Gary Marcus, CEO of Geometric Intelligence and a professor of psychology at New York University, said that autonomous driving technology will be at the heart of their work. Marcus will lead the new division of Uber.
Neither Marcus nor Uber disclosed the terms of the transaction and disclosed the amount of the acquisition.
In August, Uber launched its first self-driving car taxi service and signed a $300 million agreement with Volvo to develop a self-driving car that will be used as a self-driving taxi and sold to consumers. Uber and Volvo will work together to solve dynamic mapping, object recognition and other challenges.
Uber has been doing research and development in autonomous vehicles. As early as the end of 2014, Uber co-founder and CEO Travis Karanic went to Pittsburgh to recruit top experts in the field of autonomous driving. In May of this year, Uber self-driving cars began to test on the road.
