As early as May of this year's I/O conference, Google gave Daydream VR solutions for the first time. Although at that time, the lack of specific details of the standard, the spectacle design is not standardized Daydream program did not cause much concern, but in view of Google's control in the Android field, people do not doubt Daydream's dominance.
Daydream is Google's development of software and hardware production standard after Android and Android Wear. After gaining monopolistic advantages in the field of mobile phones and smart watches, it seems that Google has entered the VR field.
In Google's view, mobile VR, which uses mobile phones as the basis for display and computing, is the future of VR ecology compared to products such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PSVR that require powerful performance.
Of course, Daydream is not Google to see the VR industry in 2016 the rapid development of the whim to follow suit. As early as June 2014, Google launched its first VR helmet Google Cardboard. This “original VR device†using cardboard as its main material was developed by Google’s two French engineers in Paris and used the “20% time†rule, which took six months to develop. Imitation of the originator.
After 28 months, Google’s second VR headline, Daydream View, finally appeared in high profile. This time, Daydream View finally has a tall appearance, fiber and rubber material to make wearing more comfortable, retractable front cover can be adapted to different sizes of mobile phones.
Moreover, this time together with Daydream View, it also includes mobile phone specifications that can be adapted to Daydream standards. Surprisingly, in Google’s official documentation, the hardware standards for Daydream Ready seem to be a bit too advanced, ahead of the Google’s own Pixel phone, there are almost no models on the market that can achieve such a harsh degree.
With regard to these hardware standards, we have briefly summarized some important points to note:
1. The processor must have at least two physical cores.
2, must support continuous performance mode, the latest Android 7.0 features.
3, the screen resolution can not be lower than 1080P, and it is strongly recommended to use 2K screen or higher resolution.
4. The screen size should be between 4.7 inches and 6.0 inches.
5, the screen refresh rate must be above 60Hz, the delay must be less than 3ms.
6, the screen must support low-persistence mode, less than 5ms of durability.
7, support Bluetooth 4.2
8,……
It can be said that such standards, first let a large number of domestic mobile phone products unable to upgrade to Android 7.0 killed. Second, the refresh rate requirements make OLED screens the standard, and so far the vast majority of mobile phones on the market use LCD screens. On the processor side, the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip on Android phones is only the starting level of Daydream. Before ZTE 7 released, it once claimed to have reached the Daydream standard, but Qualcomm said that it is equipped with Snapdragon 820 processor. Not enough in performance.
Judging from the current situation, Google’s Daydream standard seems to be more closely related to the Chinese translation of “Daydreaming,†even if it is officially confirmed by Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, HTC, and ZTE. LG and other vendors have jointly developed Daydream-certified models, but responders have so far been able to describe them.
It seems that Daydream has not been recognized by mainstream hardware manufacturers, it is more like Google's perfect marketing for its Pixel mobile phone. However, is this really the case?
In reality, it is not.
In fact, as far as the current VR ecology is concerned, Oculus, HTC, and Sony have taken a three-pronged position and their dominance is unshakeable. The problem is that all they have in common is that they need to put the main body of operation on the table and then connect it to the helmet through a thick cable, which is not conducive to the large-scale adoption of VR. Therefore, with the popularity of Android phones, using mobile phones as a breakthrough, Google's dream of mobile VR is clear.
However, Google did not use the existing scale advantage to force hardware popularization in the beginning, but this has its wily considerations. In reality, the current constraints on the development of mobile VR and even the entire VR industry are not hardware but content. The scarcity of content has led to the inability of VR hardware to play, and content development has come from the inconsistent standards.
Daydream reduces the cost of VR content development, unified underlying hardware, operating systems, drivers, graphics APIs, and game engines, giving developers more time and energy to think and discuss how to make better VR content. In the past, developers need to think about the problems they may encounter when they do VR content every day. What kind of staffing is needed and who needs to adapt to their hardware equipment needs to be put in that application market to obtain high user volume and income, etc. Wait. Now DayDream will naturally have a strong compatibility and low development threshold, as well as a perfect application market and a large user base.
Therefore, through continuous enrichment of content to attract consumers, it is firmly believed that the upgraded mobile phone hardware will meet the Daydream standard, and then unify the entire mobile VR market and replicate the success of Android. This is Google's big plan.
At a visible level, core technologies such as core algorithms and low-level optimizations that VR hardware vendors have relied on for years have been killed by Google. The rest is unified standards and unified interaction. The ensuing one will be the explosion of VR content. At present, major manufacturers are going their own way, and the situation of splinters may end. Industry consolidation is an inevitable trend, and it is not surprising that the next VR hardware outbreak.
