Singapore's driverless bus Arma will go on the road test in the first quarter of next year

According to an agreement signed by Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the two sides will cooperate in the development of driverless bus technology. Singapore hopes that driverless buses will ease traffic congestion and encourage people in the country to use more shared cars and public transportation. In the first quarter of 2017, Singapore’s unmanned shuttle bus service will begin operations.

The bus is called Arma and was developed by the French company Navya. According to the information on the company's website, Arma uses lidars and cameras to detect obstacles in front of the road and report its position to the base station via GPS. Therefore, the operator can know the real-time location of the vehicle.

The Arma is powered by electric power and can last for half a day depending on the distance traveled and the traffic conditions.

The self-driving bus can carry 15 passengers and will travel from the Nanyang Technological University campus to the CleanTech Eco-Industrial Park, about 1.5 km away. The Nanyang Technological University official has released a video on Facebook to showcase the new air-conditioned bus and announced that the bus will be available next semester.

Singapore’s traffic regulator said on Facebook: “The big dreams are all starting small, so we decided to test the driverless bus in cooperation with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. We will start with two hybrid buses.”

Arma is not the only driverless car tested on the campus of Nanyang Technological University. Two large full-size buses will also travel between the CleanTech Industrial Park and Nanyang Technological University.

These electric buses have been modified by lidar and other smart technologies. Researchers at Nanyang Technological University have also developed software to manage these buses.

As a policy-supporting country with a lot of unmanned driving, Singapore announced in August this year that it began testing unmanned taxi nuTonomy. However, nuTonomy collided with a truck during a test in October, testing the car and changing lanes when it collided with the truck. Fortunately, the accident did not cause any injuries.
