IHS Markit conducted a new survey in March and April 2018, asking 937 smart speaker users scattered in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany and Brazil to answer various questions about the use of their devices. According to the findings shared today, only 6% of smart speaker users use their speakers to direct smart home devices such as lights, switches and thermostats.
The products included in the survey are HomePod / Siri, Google Home / Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana, Bixby, and Amazon Echo / Alexa. The most popular categories of smart speaker control for all speakers are asking for weather and news, then sorting in descending order: basic questions, music control / discovery, sending messages and making calls, control / discovery, making purchases, controlling smart home devices, and finally "Other" category.
Although the usage rate of users interacting with smart home products through speakers is very low, but IHS chief analyst Blake Kozak believes that this situation will change in the near future.
