Allegro MicroSystems Announces Micropower LED Driver with Hall Effect Switch

Simple LED lighting single chip solution

Worcester, MA – Allegro MicroSystems, LLC introduces a new APS13568 micropower LED driver IC with integrated Hall-effect switch. The new product requires only a small electrical engineering design, a small number of additional components and a lower The overall cost is a compact, compact, reliable and fault-tolerant LED lighting design. The APS13568 single-chip solution integrates a micropower regulator, Hall plate, small signal amplifier, chopper regulator, Schmitt trigger, open-drain Hall-effect switch, output polarity selection, and LED driver with soft on/off and self-recovery short/overheat protection. The integrated solid-state Hall-effect switch supports a silent, sealed, non-contact activation design with significant reliability improvements over mechanical switches that are prone to failure and has a very low standby current (25μA).

The APS13568 LED driver enables a low noise, adjustable linear drive that delivers up to 150mA of drive current for one or more LEDs. An optional external capacitor can program the on/off rate for an elegant "theater" effect, controlled by a Hall effect switch that can be turned on and off depending on the magnetic field. The Hall-effect switch is an omnipolar device (responsive to the north and south magnetic poles) and has high sensitivity (BOP=40G), capable of supporting a variety of mechanical configurations and a variety of housings with different air gaps and mechanical deviations. The AP13568 has an optional output polarity and an open-drain output for connecting additional external circuitry.

The APS13568 adds an external output and can operate at a tiny power of 25μA. The new device complements Allegro's existing portfolio of LED drivers and Hall-effect switches, targeting consumer electronics, white goods, marine, and entertainment. Type vehicles (RV), motorcycles, etc., as well as in-vehicle and auxiliary automotive lighting applications such as glove boxes, center consoles, vanity mirrors, trunks/boots, and truck beds. The APS13568's integrated micropower regulator operates from a supply voltage of 7V to 24V and consumes very low average supply current when the output is disabled. The APS13568 also integrates Zener clamps, output short-circuit protection, thermal shutdown, and reverse battery protection to enhance reliability and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). By using dynamic offset cancellation technology, the offset voltage normally caused by device overmolding, temperature drift, and thermal stress can be reduced, thereby enabling Hall switches to have better performance.

The APS13568 device is available in two models: the "K" model is automotive grade (AEC-Q100 compliant) and operates over the -40°C to +125°C temperature range; the “E” model is suitable for operation from -40°C to +85 °C industrial and consumer applications. Both models are RoHS compliant and feature a high thermal performance SOIC-8 surface mount package (codename "LJ").
