The heating system alone does not provide a comfortable ride for the crew. When the outside temperature is above 20 °C, the comfortable temperature inside the car can only rely on cold air to cool down. Cold air is produced by a compressed refrigeration system using R12 Freon refrigerant. In order to protect the environment, R12 Freon has been phased out since 1995 and R134a has been used.
The engine-driven compressor compresses the vaporizable refrigerant, which is accompanied by an increase in temperature. The refrigerant then flows into the condenser and is cooled back to a liquid state. The heat transferred from the compressor to the refrigerant is sent to the outside of the system. The refrigerant is injected into the evaporator through an expansion valve and then evaporated. The required heat of vaporization is absorbed from the outside air. When the humidity of the incoming air is too high, it condenses into water in the condenser, thereby drying the air.
The evaporator and condenser are generally designed as tube-and-tube heat exchangers for round tubes. The evaporator is placed upstream of the inlet flow of the heater core. Since the cooling cycle in the evaporator can only be roughly adjusted with the start or stop of the compressor. Therefore, the evaporator must continuously supply supercooled cryogenic air and feed it to the heater core for reheating for precise temperature regulation.
