High-brightness LED global consumer market forecast: increase by 6 times in the next 10 years

A new market research report recently released by ElectroniCast Consultants indicates that the global consumption of packaged high-brightness LEDs in 2011 was US$ 10.77 billion. High-brightness LEDs defined by ElectroniCast Consultants are LEDs with luminous efficiencies of 30 to 70 lumens/watt.

The report predicts that by 2021, the global consumption of high-brightness LEDs is expected to reach 69.7 billion US dollars. This data refers to the consumption of a particular calendar year, not cumulative data.

The declining average selling price may lead to a challenging growth model for high-brightness LEDs in some applications. Therefore, from 2016 to 2021, it is expected that the consumption of high-brightness LEDs in some applications will decline; however, sales of high-brightness LEDs in all application areas are expected to increase in the next decade.

The use of high-brightness LEDs in mobile and portable devices will remain strong, but organic LEDs will continue to occupy a certain market share. The development of this sector is relatively mature and has achieved considerable consumption in 2012. From 2011 to 2016, consumption of high-brightness LEDs in the automotive/vehicle sector is expected to increase more than twofold.

High-brightness LED Global Consumer Market Forecast

From 2011 to 2016, it is expected that the use of high-brightness LEDs in the static (non-vehicle) signal area will reach an annual average growth rate of 5.5%; but with the slowdown in price decline and market saturation, high-brightness LEDs in the field of static signals The consumption will drop sharply; however, sales of high-brightness LEDs in this area will increase slightly from 2016 to 2021.

LEDs can be used in functional and decorative lamps, with the advantages of energy saving. Compared with incandescent lighting, LED solid-state lighting generates less heat, and its solid-state characteristics provide better impact and wear resistance, which greatly increases the service life.

From 2011 to 2016, the consumption of high-brightness LEDs in logo/professional display applications is expected to increase at an average annual rate of 22.1%, which is expected to reach 35.9% between 2016 and 2021. In 2016, the consumption of high-brightness LEDs in other applications will reach US$710 million and will begin to decline in the next five years.

From 2011 to 2016, high-brightness LED applications will maintain a high market share in consumer TV/desktop displays backlighting, from 2016 to 2021, with the saturation of many markets and the competition from organic LEDs. This share will start to decline.

In addition, due to improvements in light-emitting efficiency and improvements in devices and packages, applications of white-packaged LEDs in consumer-grade LCD TVs and desktop display backlights will decline.

The consumption of high-brightness LEDs in the Americas—including South America, Central America and North America—is expected to increase from US$3.88 billion in 2011 to US$24.73 billion in 2021. In 2011, the consumption of high-brightness LEDs in the EMEA region accounted for 20.2% of the global market. As the region's growth pace is accelerated from 2016 to 2021, its market share will also increase.

Electronicast expects that a major factor in the promotion of high-brightness LED applications will be continued financial support, including subsidies and incentives, as well as regulatory and government-produced energy efficiency laws, regulations and standards.
