I like to try different Linux distributions via USB sticks. It allows me to test the operating system on real hardware instead of in a virtualized environment. In addition, I can plug USB into any system (like a Windows system), do whatever I want, and enjoy the same Linux experience. And, if something goes wrong with my system, I can use U disk recovery!
Creating a single bootable live version of Linux USB is as simple as downloading an ISO file and burning it to a USB drive. But what if you want to try multiple Linux distributions? You can use more than one U disk, or you can overwrite the same U disk to try other Linux distributions. But neither of these methods is very convenient.
So, is there a way to install multiple Linux distributions on a single USB stick? We will see how to do this in this tutorial.
How to create a bootable USB with multiple Linux distributions
We have a tool that can just keep multiple Linux distributions on a single USB stick. All you need to do is choose the distribution you want to install. In this tutorial, we will describe how to install multiple Linux distributions in a USB flash drive for live session live sessions.
To make sure that you have a large enough U disk to install multiple Linux distributions on it, an 8 GB USB stick should be sufficient for three or four Linux distributions.
step 1
MultiBootUSB is a free, open source, cross-platform application that allows you to create USB sticks with multiple Linux distributions. It also supports uninstalling any distribution at any time so that you can reclaim space on the drive for another distribution.
Download the .deb package and double-click to install it.
Step 2
The recommended file system is FAT32, so be sure to format the USB drive before creating a multi-boot USB drive.
Step 3
Download the ISO image of the Linux distribution to be installed.
Step 4
After completing these, start MultiBoot USB.
The main screen asks you to select the U disk and the Linux distribution image you intend to put on the USB disk.
MultiBootUSB supports the persistence of Ubuntu, Fedora, and Debian distributions, which means that changes made to the live version of the Linux distribution will be saved to USB.
You can choose the persistence size by dragging the slider under the MultiBootUSB tab. Persistence gives you the option of saving changes to the USB drive at runtime.
Step 5
Click the Install Release option and continue with the installation. It takes some time to complete before displaying a successful installation message.
You can now see the distribution in the Installed section. Repeat this process for another operating system. This is what I did after installing Ubuntu 16.10 and Fedora 24.
Step 6
The next time I boot from USB, I can choose any distribution.
As long as your U disk allows, you can add any number of distributions. To delete a release, select it from the list and click Uninstall Release.

MultiBootUSB really makes it easy to install multiple Linux distributions on a USB stick. With just a few clicks, I have two working platforms for my favorite operating system. I can start them on any system.
