In a controlled study in New York, according to Reuters show that lighting can reduce crime by 39% at night.
The New York City Police Department, the New York City Housing Authority, and the Science Research Group Crime Lab, together with the Criminal Justice Office, designed a six-month randomized controlled trial involving nearly 80 public housing communities with high crime rates. In the trial, about one and a half of the community installed new temporary street lights, and the other half did not.
The study found that the crime rate of communities installing new street lights was significantly lower than that of communities without new street lights.
The results of the study show that increasing the level of lighting can reduce the so-called crime index by 7% overall, and at night, the crime index can be reduced by 39%.
The researchers said the survey showed that two-thirds of residents were satisfied with the new fixtures.
Although there have been few previous studies on the effects of lighting on crime, the study used a rigorous randomized controlled trial (RCT) to measure the impact of street lighting on crime.
