Sony announces production and sales of OLED TVs in Japan

On February 21st, weak demand forced Sony to stop selling OLED TVs in Japan.
Sony will cancel the production and sale of 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TVs in Japan for $2,500. However, Sony said it will continue to invest in other countries to produce and develop such TV sets.
The world's first OLED TV was introduced three years ago and was praised for its brilliant colors and clear images. TVs with O LED displays are thinner and more energy efficient than LED TVs or plasma TVs. However, the small display and high price of XEL-1 actually makes this product never win a large market share among ordinary consumers.
OLED displays have been used in mobile phones and other small display mobile devices. However, the production of OLED televisions is very difficult and very expensive, especially for large-sized televisions. Although Sony Zengnu wants to produce 27-inch OLED TVs, this product has never appeared. The Wall Street Journal reported last August that Sony’s poor financial situation may indicate that Sony will stop producing future OLED TVs.
Other manufacturers such as Samsung and LG also showed OLED TVs at trade shows. However, like Sony, these companies have encountered the problem of mass production of such TV sets. Therefore, no one has announced that the product is actually put on the market.
Sony's withdrawal from this technology may end the life of OLED TVs, at least for now, as vendors are looking for other low-cost technological innovations such as 3D TVs and LED-backlit LCD TVs.
