Global Mobile Communications Conference, Barcelona, Spain, March 2, 2015 - Wind River®, the world's leading provider of intelligent connected systems software, is working with China Mobile to develop multiple NFV engineering projects, including new NFV testing labs and joint development Virtualize the Small Cell Gateway and C-RAN solution. The two parties are committed to supporting the entire telecommunications industry to promote NFV deployment, shorten time to market, and reduce operating costs.
China Mobile has established a new test lab based on the OPNFV open source project, focusing on accelerating the deployment of NFV through an integrated open platform. As the only laboratory in Asia, the OPNFV lab is equipped with a real network access environment, providing a rich software and hardware infrastructure for open standards-based testing and integration. With a well-established environment and planned testing and evaluation of the commercial-grade NFV platform, the lab provides numerous opportunities for participation by a wide range of partners across the ecosystem. Wind River is one of the founding partners of the lab.
The virtualized Small Cell Gateway technology jointly developed by the two parties shows that the data plane network element equipment with deployment prospects can be realized through NFV technology, and the degree of customization of network element functions and performance can be improved under the premise of reducing operating costs. As data traffic shows an exponential growth trend, virtualized Small Cell Gateway is becoming an increasingly attractive way to expand network capacity.
The ASTRI Small Cell Gateway, represented by the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute, is a virtual network function (VNF) on the Wind River TItanium Server that runs on Intel architecture and provides signaling offload and mobile data for the mobile core network. Management capabilities and pre-verified and optimized with TItanium Server. TItanium Server is a carrier-grade NFV infrastructure designed to meet the stringent requirements of the telecom industry.
Yang Zhiqiang, vice president of China Mobile Research Institute, pointed out that "the telecom industry is introducing NFV technology to minimize operating costs while deploying fast new services. However, this cannot be at the expense of performance and system reliability. Carrier-grade High reliability requirements must be met. Our project to virtualize the Small Cell Gateway with Wind River is an attempt in this regard."
Charlie Ashton, senior director of network solutions at Wind River, said, "Data traffic is constantly breaking through the limits of the network, and operators are actively seeking to deploy NFV technology. The complexity of NFV technology comes from many aspects. To achieve substantial progress, it must be with China. Mobile industry leaders like this. Wind River TItanium Server delivers carrier-grade virtualization technology for NFV infrastructure on a proven foundation, giving service providers new flexibility, scalability and operational costs And energy efficiency benefits."
China Mobile and Wind River jointly developed the C-RAN solution for NFV deployment, providing a practical model of successful C-RAN, with pure hardware system performance, enabling thermal migration from L1 to L3, and meeting ETSI NFV Industry Standards Group requirements. The solution will also be on display at the Mobile World Congress, with the core still being Wind River Titanium Server technology running on Intel architecture servers with dedicated hardware accelerators. This virtual base station NFV application example can reliably provide low-latency, high-performance data processing in a near-real-time environment, and is running in a multi-application virtualized environment.
Dr. Yi Zhiling, chief scientist of China Mobile Research Institute, pointed out that "an important challenge in the process of virtualizing C-RAN using NFV is to reliably perform high-performance data processing with near real-time performance, and must run In the multi-application virtualization environment, through cooperation with Wind River, we successfully developed the industry's first dynamic carrier migration prototype that supports the high real-time requirements of the LTE complete protocol stack. This result is very exciting for us. Cooperation with Wind River is full of expectations."
Both the virtualized Small Cell Gateway and the C-RAN will be on display at the 2015 Mobile World Congress China Mobile booth (Hall 3, Stand 3A10). In addition, more NFV technology will also be displayed at the Wind River booth (Hall 7, Stand 7J65).
